Another Week, Another Book!

“The average american reads 4 books a year, a top CEO reads 60+ books per year” – Grant Cardone

This weeks book is The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier and it’s aimed at people who are in managerial positions. The key theme is helping the people we are responsible for make their own decisions, rather than constantly asking us to point them in the right direction.

It’s the first book of Michael’s I’ve read and it’s very insightful, straight to the point and easy to understand. Michael talks about a series of 7 questions that will help us get the best from our team, without them taking up too much time. Which isn’t something that will happen overnight, the coaching of out team to make their own work related choices will take time. The mind cannot be reprogrammed in a day!

I’m not going to give you all of Michael’s secret questions, but I will give you the first one – What’s on your mind? It works brilliantly because we’re not assuming we know the challenges their facing and gets us straight to the heart of the problem.

If you’re intrigued to see all of Michael’s questions grab your kindle copy today! Hope you enjoy.

Retroactive Jealousy

Retroactive jealousy is having an emotional reaction to a past event in our partner’s life, at which we were not present and before we knew them. But, before we can have an emotional response we must be attached to them – we must care. The more we care the more likely we are to have retroactive jealousy and the harder it is to overcome.

Retroactive jealousy is our minds way of protecting us from getting hurt, or rather the mind fears getting hurt and that’s why it plays mini-movies in our minds of our partners past relationships.

Hope is not lost, and no, Obi-Wan Kenobi is not our only hope! One of the techniques I found incredibly helpful is using the belief that everything happens for a reason. If our partners past relationships didn’t happen, or you were to change even the smallest event, it’s possible that they would be a different person and you may not love them. Plus, you may never have met!! Would you be willing to risk changing an event in their past if it may result in never meeting them?

This post has only touched the tip of the iceberg, if you’re looking for more help with overcoming retroactive jealousy I found Jeff Billings book – How To Stop Being Jealous Of Your Partner’s Past In 12 Steps – really helpful and it’s one I highly recommend you read.

Don’t Over Think This!

Over thinking comes natural to me. Present me with an idea and hear the cogs of my mind turn as it creates an ever-growing cloud of scenarios.

The greatest challenge I find with being an overthinker is living in the moment. Take having a conversation with a friend as an example. Rather than listening and enjoying what they have to say I’ll find myself asking the following questions;

  • Why are they saying it in that tone of voice?
  • Why did they chose the words they spoke and not another collection?
  • What are they really trying to say?
  • What’s their body language saying?

These are just a handful of questions that flash through my mind in a matter of moments. If you’re riddle with the curse of over thinking too, don’t despair, there are simple disciplines you can adopt. Here are my favourites;

Breathing

Concentrate of your breathing. Totally focus on breathing in and then breathing out. Not only does this quiet the mind instantly, but it also has a calming effect. What’s more you can do this anytime any place!

Meditate

Meditating every day gives you the benefit of observing your thoughts which gives you a better idea of where they come from. And from this clearing the mind becomes easier. Start by mediating for just 5 minutes every day.

Stop

When the mind is racing uncontrollably, say stop either out loud or in your head. Sometimes we just need a shock to bring us back to the here and now.

Must Read: Independent Author

How I Made Over $1 Million Using The Law of Attraction  – E.K. Santo

The Law of Attraction is a minefield of knowledge, once you’ve set one-off the falling debris of knowledge will land on another mine and they’ll be more information to absorb.

I often felt overwhelmed when I first came across LOA, but jut like algebra, once you understand it there’s no going back.

This brilliant, little book by E.K.Santo explains the LOA in a simple, straight to the point manner. Not only does the author help you understand it, but he then goes on to teach how to use it to achieve your goals.

I finished reading this book back in January using my kindle, but already going to reread it, this time in print so I can make notes and jot down my thoughts.

I’d love to know what value you get and how it helps you, send an email to hello@joehinchliffe.com with your takeaways!

You Were Chosen For A Reason

There is only you, from the entire human race who can help the people you want to help, to achieve the things you want to accomplish, to change the world to how you see it in your mind’s eye.

I say this because out of 9 million sperm you were chosen. You could have been 1 of 9 million people and yet here you are. You have a combination of strengths and weaknesses that are unique what’s more, you’ll possess thoughts and ideas that no one else has.

The only decision that needs to be made is, are you going to take action. Are you going to step-up, chase your dreams and live your life – your way.

Decide what you want and write in down.

What Is The Meaning Of Life?

Today’s is a short post. I came across an unexpected video from an unlikely source – Jim Carrey.

It made me think about life and what I’m striving for, and is it inline with who I am. Invest 4 minutes, give it a watch.

gorilla
Forget What They Say

People are always going to talk, no matter if you’re Mother Teresa or Gandhi, someone will not agree with you. It’s as certain as the sun rising in the morning and setting at night.

It’s not a case of trying to stop them, but taking what they say with a pinch of salt. Someone wiser than me once said – What other people think of you is none of your business! And I completely agree!

You could save a child from mortal danger and there will be people who find something wrong with it! Just recently a child fell into a gorilla enclosure at Cincinnati Zoo and sadly, the decision was made to kill the gorilla to protect the child. In a perfect world both would be alive however, would you be willing to run the risk of a child being killed whilst the gorilla was tranquillized? I know I wouldn’t!

It takes courage to be you and stand by your decisions, conformity is widespread across society with most trying to emulate celebrities in order to fit rather than being themselves.

Be Brave.

Be Bold.

Be You.

And

Forget What People Say, They Will Always Talk!

set of the sail
It Is The Set Of The Sails, Not The Direction Of The Wind That Determined Which Way We Will Go – Jim Rohn

In a world where we crave certainty there is only one thing we can be sure of – change is inevitable. Consistency gives us a sense of security whereas change fills us with fear.

Change is something everyone has to handle at some point. Whether it’s a new job, moving house or going to a different country.

How To Deal With Change

Our mindset towards change is the major factor that determines how it affects us. Viewing change as a positive, which could bring about an abundance of opportunities rather than a negative, is the first step.

Having the belief that you can handle anything life throws at you is another major part to handling change. Susan Jeffers in her best-selling book: Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway, states the main reason we fear anything is because we believe we won’t be able to handle it. And yet, we’ve handled everything life has thrown at us so far!

dont be average

Don’t Be Average!

The average American watches 5 hours of TV per day!

The average American sleeps for 8 hours per day – leaving only 16 hours of ‘active’ time.

That means, over 30% of the average Americans time awake is invested in TV. The figures become more shocking when you consider a weeks worth of TV time – 35 Hours – nearly a day and a half!

When you consider this statistic, it’s no surprise the majority complain of ‘not having enough hours in the day’ – we waste the most precious asset on a box that plays video.

Small Changes

Watching one less hour of TV per day will see you gain 7 hours a week which can be put to work on your goals.

Completely eradicating TV will see you gain an extra day and a half every week! Who doesn’t need 8 days a week to get shit done!
