Must Read: Independent Author

How I Made Over $1 Million Using The Law of Attraction  – E.K. Santo

The Law of Attraction is a minefield of knowledge, once you’ve set one-off the falling debris of knowledge will land on another mine and they’ll be more information to absorb.

I often felt overwhelmed when I first came across LOA, but jut like algebra, once you understand it there’s no going back.

This brilliant, little book by E.K.Santo explains the LOA in a simple, straight to the point manner. Not only does the author help you understand it, but he then goes on to teach how to use it to achieve your goals.

I finished reading this book back in January using my kindle, but already going to reread it, this time in print so I can make notes and jot down my thoughts.

I’d love to know what value you get and how it helps you, send an email to with your takeaways!

When You Can’t Read – Listen!

If you’re a regular reader of this site you’ll know that I promote the need to – Invest In Yourself So You Can Design Your Own Life. And the most practised method of investing in yourself is reading.

But, what can you do when you can’t read? Let’s say you’re driving or making breakfast, but the urge to improve yourself is strong. This is where listening works perfectly.

Not only is listening to inspirational, educational and motivational material great when you need your hands free, but it reinforces the ideas you’ve picked up from reading. The human brain can learn in a variety of ways and using two rather than one will help you learn.

A fantastic resource I highly recommend is Audible. It’s an Amazon company and has 1000’s of fantastic audio books. What’s more you can get a free audio book when you sign up! Click Here to create your account.

Invest In Yourself So You Can Design Your Own Life

We all have dreams and goals. For us to achieve them we need to grow, our thoughts and then, actions have to change.

A great question to ask in pursuit of any goal is;

What do I have to become to achieve it?

This will spark a whole host of other questions and require more thinking, on your own and with a mastermind group.

Those you ask questions generally find answers

Plant Seeds Daily

One ritual that has been key to me going from £50,000 in debt to embarking on exploring Australia within 4 years is; reading or listening to 30 minutes of inspirational, educational or motivational material every day.

Garbage In = Garbage Out

Whatever you out into the mind you’ll get the same out. If you’re feeding the mind with good stuff, you’ll get good out. The same is true of bad stuff.

However, the same is true of great ideas. Feed the mind great ideas and you’ll produce great ideas.

If you’re looking for new ideas check out my 2 blog post on business biography books. I’m confident you’ll find some ideas from the greatest minds in the past 100 years.

Forget About Your Worries and Your Strife – Baloo

Recently I watched the new Jungle Book movie, which is amazing, if you haven’t seen it I definitely recommend it!

And there’s no doubt about it, the original Jungle Book is a timeless classic. But, just like The Lion King it contains so many life lessons. Did you catch any of these;

Remember the Bare Necessities

Appreciate the world around you, from the smallest of things like bees, to the biggest – bears. And to top it off the songs super catchy, have a listen. I challenge you to not sign along.

Dance Like Nobody’s Watching
Let your personality shine through! We’ve all done it, dancing when there’s no one around, but sometimes you just need to forget what other people think and be you!

Laugh Often
Nothing soothes the soul and brightens the day like laughter! The best thing to laugh at is yourself!

Don’t Use Your Head To Open a Coconut
It hurts more than you imagine!

The Distance between Dreams and Reality Is Called Action

Napoleon Hill talks about two fundamentals to having everything you want in his best-selling book, Think and Grow Rich, they are; desire and belief.

Desire is knowing what you want.

Belief is knowing you can have whatever it is you want.

Both are easier said than done, but nearly everything is!

I believe there is another key ingredient to success – Action!

Everything you see around you once started as an idea in someone’s mind, including these words you are reading. In order for them to go from my mind to the screen, I had to take action. This is true of any idea.

For an idea to leave the mind and become something we experience action has to be taken. The act can be big or small, what matters is, it gets done.

Make your dreams a reality by taking action.

Desire + Belief + Action = Success

Top 10 Biography Books (Part 2)

And here’s part two, hopefully you enjoyed part one and can’t wait to see my all-time favourite 5!

5) Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose – Tony Hsieh

This is a surprisingly, remarkable book! I have to admit when I first came across this book I wasn’t expecting it to great, probably as I hadn’t heard of Zappos. However, once you’re a few chapters deep you will have to read the rest. It’s one of those books you have to finish and that’s why it’s number five on my all-time favourite biography books!

4) Losing My Virginity – Richard Branson

What can I say about Richard that hasn’t already been said? For anyone who’s interested in becoming an entrepreneur or already is one, read this book. It is a long one, but unlike Warren Buffett’s biography this held my attention all the way through. Richard has had an interesting life and I still can’t quite believe all the stuff he’s accomplished. Invest your money and time, read this book.

3) Sam Walton: Made in America My Story – Sam Walton and John Huey

More of an American entrepreneur as Wal-Mart only recently acquired ASDA in the UK, but an intriguing read none the less.

Sam tells how he built his small business into an empire which dominates the American discount market. I picked up a few brilliant ideas, the best being how Sam looks and learns from his competitors.

2) Grinding It Out: The Making Of McDonald’s – Ray Kroc

A worldwide phenomenon and an interesting back story. McDonald’s a humongous company however, every business has to start somewhere, find out in this book.

And if that doesn’t interest you maybe this will – who has been to a McDonald’s? And would you like people asking the same question about your business?

1) Walt Disney: An American Original – Bob Thomas

Walt Disney – the man, the myth, the legend. This man, and his brother I might add, not only created the Empire that is Disney, but he also built a city-sized theme park – twice!

What more can I say, he built a city.

Top 10 Biography Books (Part 1)

Biography books are not only entertaining and intriguing, if you’re nosey like me. They often contain useful nuggets and ideas.

Here’s my favourite 10, but I’m not giving you them all at once, you’ll have to wait until the next post for my favourite 5!

10) The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life – Alice Schroeder

I find Warren Buffett fascinating and very interesting. This book provides a window into his life.

Warren is one of the richest people on the planet, and if that’s your aim, this book is definitely one for you. The reasons it’s not closer to the number 1 spot is;

  • It’s incredibly long and detailed – with my short attention span I never finished it.
  • Warren is highly intelligent and I don’t believe I could replicate what he does, or do I want his lifestyle.

9) It’s Not What You Think – Chris Evans

Chris Evans is a slight curve ball as he’s not primarily a business person, but he is included as I took great value from his failures. Chris’ life has few lows which I hope you can learn from plus his life is very interesting. A stand out moment is the purchase and sale of Virgin Radio.

8) The Real Deal: My Story from Brick Lane to Dragon’s Den

James is a recruitment tycoon from London. His career begins with employment, where he becomes very successful before moving on to found Alexander Mann recruitment business.

7) Bread: The Story of Greggs – Ian Gregg

One for the UK readers! The story how Greggs rose from making bread to how they stand today provides inspiration for all bricks and mortar business. What’s more, it’s an easy and enjoyable read.

6) Top Man: How Philip Green Built His High Street Empire – Stewart Lansley

Another fascinating biography, this time on the high street giant – Philip Green. I found it a remarkable tale how Philip rose from humble beginnings to dominate the UK retail sector. However, my favourite part is Philips continued pursuit of Marks and Spencer

And there’s 10 through to 6! You’ll have to wait two days for my favourite 5.

6 Books To Read This Year

Highly successful people read, it’s a fact. No matter what they do or who they are, they invest in themselves.
I read my first book on personal development at the age of 22, Think and Grow Rich. Reading that book changed my life, I even wrote a blog post titled: The Book That Changed My Life.

Since then I have been inspired to read 1-2 books per week. If you want to design your own life, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

People often ask what are my favourite books. The answer changes over time depending on what I’m studying. The books may change but the topic is always related to personal growth.

Here are my 6 favourite books.

1. Achieve Anything In Just One Year by Jason Harvey

This is an exceptional book, one that I’m sure you will get lots of value from. I normally talk about getting 3 takeaways but with this I took 24 and that was me holding back.

Jason has set the book out so that for every day of the year you read one page. Each day there’s famous quote from historic figures and a task for you to complete. I’m not keen with sticking to rules and I tend to be all or nothing which is why I didn’t read a page a day but instead finished it in 5 days.

It’s the first on my list for a reason, please read it. Here are 3 of my takeaways;

  • Journal every day. If you don’t know what to write, write exactly that “I don’t know what to write”. You’ll soon get bored of that. Don’t plan what to write, let your pen do the talking.
  • If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything – Mark Twain
  • You never fail if you learn from your mistakes

2. How to Succeed with People by Paul McGee

Here’s another example of me failing to stick to 3 takeaways….9 this time! This is fantastic book, which is easy to read.

People skills are a top trait running through all successful people. I invest of a lot of my personal development time into becoming better with people.

Here are 3 of my favourite takeaways;

  • It’s difficult to sustain anger with someone who’s agreeing with you and trying to understand you.
  • If you want to succeed with people focus on meeting their needs first rather than your own. Treat them how they want to be treated.
  • People with a need to be liked don’t change the world. To be successful with people it’s more important to be respected then to be liked.

3. The Art of Happiness by The Dalai Lama

Everyone wants to be happy! And who better to learn from than The Dalai Lama.

This book is in an interview style with co-author, Howard C.Cutler asking the questions. The Dalai Lama tells some fascinating stories which I’m sure will inspire you to become better.

Here are my 3 simple points of value that I took away;

  • The Dalai Lama’s model for intimacy is based on a willingness to open ourselves to many others; family, friends and even strangers, forming genuine and deep bonds based on our common humanity.
  • Shifting perspective – deliberately broadening our outlook so we can often overcome the kind of extreme thinking that leads to negative consequences.
  • Investigators have proven that by replacing these distorted modes of thinking with accurate information, one can bring about a change in one’s feelings and improve one’s mood.

The Next 3 Books….

I hope you’ve enjoyed the 3 books and have taken at least 3 points of value from this post and the books.

How to make the Law of attraction work for you

Do you only think about what you want and not what you don’t want?

When I was asked this question, I said “Yes of course!” But when I thought about it a little more I began to understand the point of the question. To put it simply, “Do you think about what you want and not what you fear?

Now think about the question again. When you think about what you want do any fears creep in?

For instance, let’s say you want a new house and you need a mortgage. Do you have any fears that you may loose your job and won’t be able to pay the mortgage? I think it may cross your mind from time to time.

Where attention goes, energy flows

The Law of attraction is simply, we get what we focus on. To use the example above; if we focus on not being able to pay the mortgage we will attract that into our lives.

The example I’ve used is a negative one, in which we fear something, worry about it so much we attract it into our lives.

The Law of Attraction also works positively. Have you ever wanted a new car? I’m sure at some point you have. After a while of wanting the car you start to notice it everywhere! The exact make, model  and colour. You see it going to work, at the supermarket, out with friends. It just won’t disappear. Before long you want that car even more. And finally after what seems like too long, you have the car!

How to focus on what you want!

Now it’s all well and good saying just focus on what you want but in reality fear and negative thoughts are going to come into your mind.

I found the technique below the most effective in combating negative thoughts!

If you have a negative or fearful thought say STOP either out load or in your mind. Then think positive thoughts that relate to your goal and what you want.

Extra study…

The Law of Attraction is a fascinating and intriguing topic, as a result there are many great books and audios with more information. I’ve listed a few of my favourite below, I hope you enjoy and get value from them!

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

As a Man Thinketh by James Allen

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale
