Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi

A networking book that delivers a knockout punch of value. Networking and meeting new people is a weakness of mine so you can imagine I found this book incredibly useful. I’d say it’s on a par with Dale Carnegie’s classic – How to Win Friends and Influence People.

If you’re like me and would like to improve your networking arsenal, take a look at what I wrote in my journal;

  • Until you become as willing to ask for help as you are to give it, you are only working half the equation.
  • The summary of networking is generosity.
  • It’s easier to get ahead in the world when those below you are happy to help you get ahead, rather than hoping for your downfall.
  • A goal is a dream with a deadline.
  • There is genius, even kindness in being bold.
  • Don’t network – make friends.
  • “Spectacular achievement is always preceded by spectacular preparation” – Robert H.Schuller.
  • Secretaries and assistants are gatekeepers to the bosses and CEOs. They must like you/become your friend if you are to get the most from the relationship with their boss.
  • Your network is like a muscle, the more you work it the bigger it gets.
  • Give yourself between 12 and 24 hours after meeting someone to follow up. A simple “it was a pleasure meeting you and discussing…” Then drop another email in a month – use phone calendar for reminder.
  • When you enter a room full of people, step to the right. See who is there. You want the other people to see you.
  • Learn to touch people. Shake hands or the authors personal favourite is touching a persons elbow.
  • Express your desire to meet again when closing the conversation e.g. “It’s been really interesting chatting with you, let’s do this again.”
  • Wisdom from Dale Carnegie;
  1. “Become genuinely interested in other people”
  2. “Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves”
  3. “Let the other person do a great deal of the talking”
  4. “Smile”
  5. “Talk in terms of the other person’s interests”
  6. “Give honest and sincere appreciation”
  • When you land in a new country message people “Hi Jan, Just landed in New York and it made me think of you. No time to meet this trip, but just wanted to touch base.”
  • Invite people round for dinner – no need to cook. Starter – crisps/chips and salsa. Main – Cooked chicken and salad wraps. Dessert – cookies and ice cream.
  • 8 Steps of dinner parties;
  1. Have a theme – meatloaf recipes, black tie, vegan food, organic, music
  2. Plan an invite people through email, social media
  3. Don’t spend time in the kitchen – pre-cook
  4. Create an atmosphere – music, candles, flowers, young child as waiter
  5. Keep it informal – jeans and jacket
  6. Don’t seat couples together – can use placeholders (name tags on seats)
  7. Relax
  8. Host virtual after party – send thanks for coming with pics of event.
  • People don’t only hire people they like, they hire people who can make their company better.

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle

A very deep book that requires some thinking time to properly grasp the meanings and truly understand the author. If you intend to read it ensure to have a pen and paper at the ready, here’s what I wrote;

  • This book is about you. It will change your state of consciousness or it will be meaningless. It can only awaken those who are ready.
  • (reading this book made me realise there’s so much I don’t understand)
  • The only difference between a crazy person and a sane person is they talk out loud.
  • The consciousness that says “I am thinking” is not the consciousness that thinks e.g. if you think about a dog, what it looks like, sounds etc the part of the mind that knows you are thinking about the dog is a different dimension of consciousness. If there was nothing but thought in you, you wouldn’t know you was thinking. You would be like a dreamer who doesn’t know they are dreaming.
  • Ego is identification with form
  • All think is required to become free of ego is be aware of it. Awareness and ego are incompatible.
  • The underlying emotion that governs all the activity of the ego is fear.
  • The most the ego can ever do to cover up the fear temporarily with an intimate relationship, new procession or winning at something.
  • “How can I be myself?” is in fact the wrong question. It implies you have to do something to be yourself.
  • Who are you? Consciousness that has become conscious of it’s self.
  • You may not want to know yourself becasue you are afraid of what you may find out. Many people have a secret fear that they are bad.
  • When you drink alcohol, you may feel relaxed, more carefree and perhaps more alive for a while because you are less burdened by your mind, you can glimpse the joy of being. Perhaps this is the reason alcohol is also called spirit.

How I Made Over $1 Million Using The Law of Attraction  – E.K. Santo

The Law of Attraction is a minefield of knowledge, once you’ve set one-off the falling debris of knowledge will land on another mine and they’ll be more information to absorb.

I often felt overwhelmed when I first came across LOA, but jut like algebra, once you understand it there’s no going back.

This brilliant, little book by E.K.Santo explains the LOA in a simple, straight to the point manner. Not only does the author help you understand it, but he then goes on to teach how to use it to achieve your goals.

I finished reading this book back in January using my kindle, but already going to reread it, this time in print so I can make notes and jot down my thoughts.

I’d love to know what value you get and how it helps you, send an email to hello@joehinchliffe.com with your takeaways!

When You Can’t Read – Listen!

If you’re a regular reader of this site you’ll know that I promote the need to – Invest In Yourself So You Can Design Your Own Life. And the most practised method of investing in yourself is reading.

But, what can you do when you can’t read? Let’s say you’re driving or making breakfast, but the urge to improve yourself is strong. This is where listening works perfectly.

Not only is listening to inspirational, educational and motivational material great when you need your hands free, but it reinforces the ideas you’ve picked up from reading. The human brain can learn in a variety of ways and using two rather than one will help you learn.

A fantastic resource I highly recommend is Audible. It’s an Amazon company and has 1000’s of fantastic audio books. What’s more you can get a free audio book when you sign up! Click Here to create your account.
